======== LA BURNING MAN ANNOUNCE 10/26/16 : LA DECOM & SEARCH FOR REGIONAL REPS EDITION =========

INTRODUCTION

Well hello there!

Didja miss us? We’ve missed you! It’s been a bit since we’ve sent out one of these here newsletters (before the burn, I think). We’ve been crazy busy and the newsletter process is (currently) time consuming, and we keep hoping it’s going to get easier to do (involving sending the newsletter from laburningman.com, but that involves programming and that ain’t us so we’re at a standstill there), or we’re going to get help doing it the hard way (we’ve got one offer but we haven’t had time to train her.

We’ve already said we’re going to just do the newsletter every-other-week, but we haven’t been successful at that since mid-August. But there’s so much official news we need to get to you! So our current plan is to just send out official business in the newsletter – Decom, meetups, BM and LA BM news, and our search for 5 more regional contacts. And stuff. But for the time being, no non-official events, news, etc. We just don’t have the bandwidth for it.

One of the things we’ve been crazy busy with is the long-anticipated LA DECOM!!

There’s two updates for you on LA Decom in the LATEST NEWS section, one with general details and the other with the permit update (spoiler: it’s going fabulously!).

We’ve been putting the call out far and wide for those who would like to self-nominate for the FIVE new regional contact positions for the greater LA area that we’re looking to fill!  As Athena moves on to her next adventure, and this region is so big we feel like we need more representation in more places. Letter from the 5 of us explaining how to get involved is in the LATESTNEWS section below.

The monthly meetups are getting better by the month! The dance-tastic Westside meetup is tonight! October featured an epic meetup Downtown, however they’re putting the November 4 meetup on hold till December, because of Decom being the next day and stuff. I haven’t heard back from the North Side Meetup folks, but my guess is they’re not doing one on Sunday Nov. 6 either.

Can’t wait to see you at Decom! We’ll probably have one more round of updates before then (aiming for Tuesday). Dust off your playa finest and get ready for Saturday November 5!

:) Plaid & Gloria “Good Vibrations”

2 of 5 LA Burning Man regionals

ps. Our @laburningman.comemails were down for a (long!) stint, they should be working again – if you can’t email someone on that server just contact me (plaid@laburningman.com) and I’ll get it fixed.

>>>>~~~~LA DECOM DETAILS!!~~~~<<<<

Trying to get this newsletter out so here are some short and sweet details on LA Decom (!!!):

WHAT: The 12th Los Angeles Burning Man Decompression Art & Music Celebration

WHEN: Saturday November 5, 1 pm until ?? (still waiting for the end time to finalize, see post on Permits for more)

WHERE: An awesome new downtown part warehouse/mostly outdoor location in the Arts District (specific location to be published once we – you guessed it – have permits). It’s a large outdoor space plus a large warehouse space, but it’s mostly outdoors, so be prepared to be outside (prep for sun then a cool night and hopefully not rain).

TICKETS: $25 cash at the door, no pre-sales.  There will be no ATMs on site, come prepared!
There will be no tickets sold after 10 pm.
No re-entry. Come early and enjoy the day and night!

CAPACITY: We’ve got a much smaller venue than our usual state park (still under construction), so we’ve got a muchsmaller capacity – 2,500 (instead of the over 8,000 we had in the park). Our advice is to come early and stay all day! We’ll be continuously updating the LA Burning Man Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/laburningman/
(which updates our @laburningman Twitter account) with the capacity status and any other advice we have on how to have a rad day at Decom.

I’m going to try to set up www.LADecom.com for mobile updates, but that’s something new for me to figure out, so no guarantees there. Signing up to get our Twitter updates is your best/easiest bet to stay informed.

PARKING: There is little to no parking at this venue. Like, almost none. We will have a Burner Bus continuously running to the Union Station parking garage throughout the day and night, or we strongly advise that you Lyft or Uber in. (I’m going to find easy parking somewhere downtown and Lyft in. – Plaid)

PARTICIPATION: We’re trying to enable as many people to participate as is possible given the smaller location and limited stages. The deadline for signing up to bring your art, art car, theme camp, music, or performance to Decom was Saturday(because they had their big Placement Meeting on Sunday and need time to organize and map everything).

If you signed up before Sunday and were placed or scheduled to perform, you should have heard back from Placement or Stages by now (or in the next few days) with details on your placement/scheduling so you can plan stuffs.

If you missed the deadline, there may be room for some small additions, but they might not be ideal or have power. Just sign up using the forms under PARTICIPATE on http://www.ladecom.com and Placement/Stages will let you know if they can add you.

STAGES:  We only have room for two stages for music, plus the Flow Arts Performance Stage. We are very excited to let you know that Art Car Bus Stop and Disorient have stepped up to cat-herd the two sound stages!

VOLUNTEER: We may need more help! I didn’t give the various teams enough time to get back to me with their requests, but there’s always something we all can do to help make Decom happen, and then be gone by the next day! Fill out the Volunteer form under PARTICIPATE on http://www.ladecom.com and/or email volunteers@laburningman.com to help out.

>>>>~~~~DID WE GET OUR DECOM PERMITS? READ THIS…~~~~<<<<

Quick and dirty answer is…

We’re kickin’ ass in the permit department!

  • We have permits from LAFD for property and fire performances, Building Department, and have had several meetings with the LAPD. The permit process is complicated because the various permits build on/unlock information that helps with the next ones, so there’s no easy “we have x out of y permits” answer.  What we do know is that the project is moving ahead full-steam!
  • Thank you for the offers, but there is no need for people to contact anyone on our behalf (permit- or police-wise), we’ve got it as handled as can be. We’ve got a great team working on this!

Next update: Aiming for Tuesday of next week! Keep an eye on the LA Burning Man Facebook page/Twitter and for the next newsletter update!

>>>>~~~~GREATER LA AREA LOOKING FOR 5 MORE REGIONAL CONTACTS~~~~<<<<

~Self nomination time has been extended till the end of the year!~

Hello, Greater Los Angeles Burners!

Your Los Angeles Regional Contact team is kicking off a search for five (5) amazing Burners to join us as the newest set of co-Regional Contacts (RCs) in support of the Greater Los Angeles Burner community.

The amazing co-RC Athena Demos will be stepping down from her role (too!) soon. Kudos to Athena for her tireless work growing community in LA so much that we need to bring on 5 more new RCs to fill her shoes to meet the needs of the growing Greater Los Angeles Burner community!

Regional Contacts (RCs) volunteer year-round to empower and nurture community initiatives and facilitate communication with the Burning Man Regional Network Team and their various community groups.

[In Plaid’s words: we’re the liaisons between the BM Org and the LA community (and the world!) answering questions – from both directions – and doing our darnedest to help build our community into the creative and awesome reflection of the creative and awesome community we know in the dust. With 10 (or 11!) principals thrown in for guidance/good measure. J ]

Could this be YOU? Are you an amazing Burner actively living or working (ideally) in communities from Long Beach, Inland Empire, Santa Barbara/Ohai, San Gabriel Valley, and Downtown LA? Those are areas in which we’d love more representation… though if you’re from the the 4 areas that already have regional reps – namely the Westside, Mid-City, North Hollywood and Valley – not to worry. Enthusiasm outweighs location. Apply anyway!

For some specifics about what it means to be a Burning Man Regional Contact and how you become one, check out the Regional Network section of BurningMan.org.

Here are some key links:

If you’d like to apply to be a Greater Los Angeles Regional Contact, the first step is to let us know by writing regional-network (at) burningman.org with “Los Angeles” in the subject line (and why you think you’d be an awesome contact in the body of the email) by December 31.

After the window to self-nominate closes, we’ll send out a Community Feedback survey to gather input from your community about their experiences with each candidate.

Sending you hugs from your (current) Greater Los Angeles Regional Contacts,

Athena, Gloria, Plaid, Johnny, and Widget

  >>>>~~~~LA BURNER MEETUP : WESTSIDE IS ROCKIN’ IT TONIGHT!!~~~~<<<<

~The Westside Meetup is on again! And as awesome as ever! – Plaid ~

Wednesday Oct 26

8p-close

The Pink Elephant

2810 Main St.

Santa Monica, CA 90405

We have some great news! The official Westside Burning Man Meetups are back on! We’ve found a location (at the Pink Elephant in Santa Monica) on the last Wednesday of every month from 8 till close!

It’s organized by LA League of Arts board member Esquire Jauchem (who will also projects awesome Burning Man videos at the meetup!), with Todd Spero and Jacob Casmir coordinating (and often DJing!) the music for the night.

If you have any Burning Man visuals you’d like to bring, find Esquire at the meetup, if you’d like to share your musical stylin’s with your fellow burners, talk to Todd or Jacob. Thanks to the three of you for getting this event started up again! (We had just gotten it rolling when we lost our last location months ago.) And of course if you can’t get ahold of Esquire, Todd, or Jacob, I can get you in contact with them/help you out, just email me plaid@laburningman.com.

>>>>~~~~LA BURNER MEETUP : DOWNTOWN : CANCELLED FOR NOVEMBER 4!~~~~<<<<

Next meet up is December 2!!

Here’s what we’ll say about next month’s meetup, just to whet your whistle a bit:

Theory Labs

The Brewery Art Lofts

Main & 5 Fwy

Los Angeles, CA 90031

If you’d like to stay in the loop about this meetup, join this shiny, new Facebook group called the DTLA Burning Man Meetup

https://www.facebook.com/groups/356172861391837/

The Downtown Meetup is a little different than the others, because it’s held in a gigantic loft/home of a bunch of burners, so it’s more conversation, less dancing (though we’ve had a great DJ to keep us groovin’ the last three meetups!) We’re likely to continue our gifting (not an exchange, gift!), maybe do more than costumes this time, in the spirit of the holidays? Details as they solidify.

HOLY COW there were a ton of people at the DTLA Meetup in October! How this event has grown yet stayed manageable, we’re all so proud! Know that we want virgins and veterans alike to come, some of you will have questions and others the answers, its playarific that way!

And as always – please BYOB. I have to say that you’ve all been amazing about this and I can’t say thank you enough! We wanted this meetup to be more of a “home” experience than we could get at a restaurant or bar. It also makes the event more accessible for people who don’t have a ton of cash. We wouldn’t be able to afford holding the meetups here at Theory every month without your amazing gifts and participation. I just wanted to say thanks! ♥

See you there (in December!!)!

Kara & Cupcake

(Your fine hosts who live in Theory Labs)

https://www.facebook.com/inTheoryLabs/

>>>>~~~~LA BURNER MEETUP : NORTH SIDE : CANCELLED FOR NOVEMBER 6!~~~~<<<<

~No November meetup because we’ll all be pooped from Decom the day before, but we’ll see you in December! – Plaid~

[Usually the] First SUNDAY of every month 7pm-midnight

Next Meetup : NOT ON NOV. 6, cancelled bc of DECOM the day before! December 4 is the next one!

But on December 4, it will be at our burner watering hole:

The Other Door

10437 Burbank Blvd; North Hollywood, CA

TheOtherDoorBar.com
